Midsummer Nights’ Dream by William Shakespeare Designs for Costume Design I

Bottom, A Midsummer Night's Dream, 2009

Bottom is a peddler of Black Forest Cuckoo Clocks (he weaves between villages) (the other mechanicals are archetypes derived from the same clockmaking tradition). In order to make the ass head, Puck takes a clock from Bottom’s pack and smashes it on Bottom’s head, upside down. Sometimes the broken cuckoo pops out and cuckoos dejectedly.
